The IS Files Episode 14: The One With My Kid In It

This post is part of a series. View the last post for context.

Clementine is here. She’s not supposed to be. She’s supposed to be with her grandma, but my mom isn’t feeling well, so my child is with me, in my office, all day, three days in a row. While I try to stick to my schedule and focus and do all those other things my brain doesn’t like to do, I also get to hear my not-quite-seven-year-old play Roblox with her friends in the background, beg me for stuff from the vending machine, and ask me every thirty minutes if she can please go look for Tobor.

Are you a working parent too? (Trick question: all parents are working parents!) Or maybe you just work, and you’re trying to figure out how to level up your career without a master’s degree. It can be hard to move up without an advanced degree, but it can also be hard to fit school into your life when it’s already full. That’s why the MAIS is perfect for anyone with a busy schedule, whether it’s due to kids, work, or some other reason. Maybe you’re trying to get your vintage heart cake bakery off the ground, or you’re training for an ultra-marathon, or you’re deeply committed to watching every episode of Real Housewives that’s ever been made.

I’m not here to judge your reasons for being busy. I’m just here to tell you the MAIS is nothing if not flexible. Because you can choose your courses, you can opt for online options, only go to class on Thursdays, pick the subjects that keep you motivated, or do whatever you need to do to get that degree. And in case I haven’t mentioned it lately: you design your own degree. So instead of sitting around wishing there was such a thing as a degree in Creative Marketing (or Sports Management or Environmental Journalism or Digital Communication or…) you can create it. Design the degree of your dreams for the career of your dreams, or just get that promotion and pay increase.

In this video I talk about my progress in the Capstone course and how I’m planning to spend my upcoming vacation. (Hint: reading, reading, and then reading some more.) You’ll also see a cameo or two from Clementine, when she’s not busy being an iPad kid in the corner.

Don’t forget to watch the video above, subscribe to our YouTube channel, and check back every other Tuesday for more in this series. As always, email kristen.walker@utdallas.edu with questions and comments.
