George Fair

Profile

George Fair earned his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics at Syracuse University and his master’s of education degree in Special Education and his doctoral degree in Special Education & Educational Research from The University of Pittsburgh.

He served as the dean of the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at UT Dallas from spring 1994 through summer 2022 and the Vice President of the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion since February 2014 until August 2021. Prior to his appointment as dean, he served as a faculty member for several years. He has maintained some teaching responsibility, especially in the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies program where he supervises the final two courses.

Research Interests

A continuing initiative throughout the last six years has been the direction of funded grants by the Texas Education Agency and several local school districts for the education of elementary and secondary school students who are in homeless situations. This work began in the late 1980s when the first national legislation for the education of homeless students was implemented. For over 25 years I have obtained funded grants from the state education agency or local school districts to assist in the direction of education projects for homeless students. The goal of these projects has been to provide educational services to these students and to assist districts in developing the infrastructure for the continuing provision of these services. These efforts have been successful in developing this capacity in several school districts.

My priorities for the last six years have been centered on building stronger and more flexible interactions between the other schools and the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, establishing a new degree program in Healthcare Studies, continued development of the Academic Bridge Program, and continuing support of the Teacher Development Center. I have nurtured connections and helped to establish partnerships between funding sources, the business/corporate community, alumni, and pertinent state agencies.
