I did it, you guys. I sort of focused for a few minutes and actually gave you some useful tips with concrete examples about how to set up your MAIS program. I did hardly any yapping about my own stuff. You’re so welcome.
If you can’t or won’t watch the video, here’s my best advice for customizing your MAIS degree.
Step 1: Start with your dream job.
What do you want to be? If you’re not sure, ask yourself: Self, if you didn’t have to get up and work every day, what would you do instead? For me, I’d hatch idea, solve problems, collaborate with cool people and make creative stuff. My dream job (at least one of my dream jobs) is Creative Director.
Step 2: Pick two schools.
Based on your dream job, ask yourself: Self, what two schools at UT Dallas have the classes I need for my degree? If Creative Director is your dream job title, maybe your two schools would be Jindal School of Management and Bass School of Arts, Humanities and Technology.
Step 3: Pick your courses.
With your advisor’s guidance, choose some classes. At JSOM, you could take courses in marketing and organizational leadership. At Bass, you may consider aesthetics, photography, creative writing and/or UX/UI design.
The key to a successful MAIS is to make sure you’re taking courses in at least three disciplines, plan carefully for your capstone and research project at the end of your program and work closely with advisors and faculty to stay on the right track.
My goal for this video and post was to provide you with practical, workable advice if you’re interested in the MAIS. I hope this was helpful! Next week, I may be back to yapping. Stay tuned!
